(note: I took the photo you see in the header of this article while visiting Berlin, Germany, in the summer of 2023. Quite the experience taking two of my sons there, and soaking in its powerful history. Shown are the boys walking past a large piece of the Berlin Wall; at least the bit that didn’t get completely knocked down.).
Some aspects of our healthcare system need knocking down. I always use Berlin wall as an analogy. We need Berlin-Wall level knocking down.
Literally. I’m not just saying that.
We need an overhaul to some of what’s become ingrained in our everyday healthcare culture, that it needs momentum to knock over and change.
If you’re outside of the system, and not feeling the weight of our struggles, this may sound foreign to you. You may be wondering why a doctor is complaining, when you picture that they should be living their best lives.
But doctors are burning out. We’re not living our best lives, because our patients aren’t living their best lives, either. The system is broken and the way we deliver care is affecting both sides.

There have been lots of middle men that have come between us, your beloved doctors, and you, our beloved patients. And that’s a shame.
Like Irith Lebovich, MD, who wrote a poignant post today about her own struggles with similar issues in Canada, I, too, have had many moments when i’ve snapped, over the years.
I’m in a better place now than I’ve ever been in life but, of course, I’m also outside of that system now. I’m using my full-time to combat some of what doesn’t work, and hoping to build momentum with really impactful, quality resources that can accomplish that.
In 2024, I plan to run a large number of virtual conferences that tackle some of what physicians struggle with, and bring forth content from which we can learn. I’ll be releasing just a few of those topics shortly, as we are actively in search of both chairs to share the impact with, and speakers to help fuel that impact, too.

It’s all very exciting, and fueled by this venture, SoMeDocs which you can follow at right here on this site.
We’re also looking to open a student section, because change doesn’t just happen from those actively practicing in the field, but from activating, the younger generation, and getting them involved early on.
I’m shouting out Kim Liebowitz, MD, MPH Debra Blaine, MD (Writers Conference for Healthcare Professionals), Franchell Hamilton, MD and Sue Benson-Davies, PhD (Obesity medicine conference), Keira Barr, MD (mind-body-skin conference), Lara Hochman, MD (Private Practice conference) Krystal Revai Sodaitis, MD, MPH (neurodiversity conference), Tiffany Troso-Sandoval, MD (cancer diagnosis conference)- all chairs already seated in upcoming conferences. But there will SURELY be more soon.
