Target Audience: This lecture is for women affected by cancer (or physicians or other providers empowering women affected by cancer).
Learning objectives:
- Attendees will understand the definition of psycho-oncology or psychosocial oncology, and be able to identify the broad range of disciplines available for mental health support within this specialty mental health field
- Attendees will understand and acknowledge the wide range of normal emotional responses during challenging points along an individual’s journey with cancer, from pre-diagnosis through remission and ongoing survivorship
- Attendees will be able to identify the elements of distress that warrant further mental health evaluation and supports
- Attendees will be able to recognize some of the common mental health issues that may arise or worsen with a cancer diagnosis and treatment
- Attendees will begin to understand some of the overlap between common physical symptoms, such as fatigue and cognitive challenges, and mental health or emotional distress
- Attendees will know whom to reach out to for additional mental health support in cancer care
