This session provides a framework for all Lifestyle and integrative medicine clinicians, health coaches, and public health leaders to integrate science-based, nature-informed care into their practices. Attendees will gain tools to advocate for nature as a vital therapeutic modality that bridges mental, physical, and spiritual health in an ecologically responsible way.
Nature exposure has been shown to modulate stress response systems, enhance vagal tone, regulate the amygdala, and improve cognitive function, offering a practical, neuroscience-informed intervention for whole-person healing.
This session will explore how greenspace activates neural pathways related to resilience, emotional regulation, and executive functioning, supporting health across the lifespan. We will present cutting-edge evidence linking nature exposure with improved heart rate variability (HRV), reductions in salivary cortisol, and enhancements in attention restoration and mood. Mechanisms such as neuroplasticity, parasympathetic activation, and sensory integration will be discussed alongside the clinical application of nature-based therapies. Real-world programs—including ParkRx America, Shinrin-yoku, and school or workplace nature integration—will be reviewed with emphasis on equity, accessibility, and systems-level policy innovations.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the evidence base linking nature exposure to improved physical, mental, and cognitive health outcomes. Participants will be able to summarize the neuroscience, key mechanisms, and clinical benefits of nature-based interventions using peer-reviewed research.
2. Identify validated tools and metrics used to assess the effectiveness of green prescriptions in clinical and community settings. Attendees will learn which metrics are commonly used to measure patient outcomes (e.g., mood, heart rate variability, stress biomarkers) and track environmental exposure using digital tools and population health data.
3. Apply practical strategies to implement and scale nature-based health interventions within their practice or organization. Learners will gain access to implementation models and prescription templates for integrating green prescriptions into routine care.
