You Can’t Win if Insurance Makes All the Rules

You Can’t Win if Insurance Makes All the Rules

Daniel Paull MD compares what insurance companies do in healthcare to playing a game that you can't win.

It’s almost impossible to win a game where the rules are set by the person you are playing against, and they can change them at will.

Picture playing Candyland with a 5 year old who can change the rules whenever they want. The 5 year old will win every time, even if your Candyland strategy is perfect!

But instead of Candyland, imagine that you are now playing the game of “trying to get paid,” but it’s with a health insurance company.

They set the rules of what you need to do in order to get paid.

If you get too good at the game, meaning getting paid too easily, they will change the rules to make it harder again.

Except that when they make it harder, it requires you to do more work in terms of hiring people to play the game for you.

The more time that passes and the harder the game gets, the more people you need to hire to keep playing the game.

The end result is that you will lose, no matter what. They will always change the rules so they win, every time.

The solution?

Don’t play the game in the first place.

Opting out of health insurance is the only long term sustainable solution. There, you can set your own rules.
