What I Do as a Direct Care Doc for Personal “Health Insurance”

Daniel Paull MD explains how he not only runs a direct care practice, but also tries to avoid the healthcare system as a patient.

July 5, 2024

I not only run a direct care practice, I also try to avoid the healthcare system myself, as a patient.

Here is what I do:

1. I use a DPC doc for my family.

There is no better primary care that you can get. Communication is good, cost is reasonable, and we can get same day appointments/text with the doc if we need to.

2. I got rid of my health insurance.

I’m not going to spend over a thousand dollars a month on a high deductible extra crappy Obama Care plan.

Especially when everyone is healthy.

There are those that get a subsidy so it can actually be affordable, but for me it is not!

3. I use a healthshare instead of health insurance.

The one I specifically use is Sedera.

The birth of our second child at the hospital cost me exactly $0.

Of course I had to float 12K of bills through and keep an organized excel spreadsheet of all of the costs.

If you’re tired of being bossed around by health insurance companies and hospital systems, but still want to practice medicine, this is the course for you!

Healthshares are good if you are healthy without any major underlying medical conditions, and don’t need expensive pharmaceutical drugs. It is truly catastrophic coverage.

But it is not health insurance, it won’t cover office visits or anything else really. And to health care systems, you are functionally uninsured.

Honestly though it costs a lot less than health insurance and there are no networks. It will even cover you abroad. I think it is a superior product for myself and my family.
