What a Good Doctor Does

Dana Corriel, MD asks whether a doctor should be labelled "bad" if they're doing something that's not yet accepted as the "norm", but may be, in future years.. innovation at play!

June 13, 2024

“What a good doctor does.”

These were words uttered by Dr. Michael Hersh, who I recently had on as a guest on my show, on SoMeDocs.

“Chiseling away” – to quote the words he used in our recorded episode – at the belief that’s been instilled in us, as to exactly how we should practice within medicine, is what some of us are now doing. You can watch or listen to the episode anytime, here.

I can think of many doctors just off the top of my head, who are stepping outside of the lines that medicine colors for us, to redefine the “norm”.

Many of those doing it are excited about it.

But many are also scared.

Never Easy

Let’s face it: it’s never easy to innovate. It’s typically easier to simply “go with the flow”.

So here’s something important for us to consider:

If a good doctor practices medicine the traditional way – the way everyone else historically has – what makes a doctor “bad”?

Does creating a podcast make one “bad”?

Does building a website?

How about connecting with other doctors across social media?

NONE of these actions were done by physicians in the past. So it’s certainly not following tradition to engage in these.

But none of these were ever options, either!

The world is changing, and society is evolving within it. It is up to us to constantly think outside of the box and continually hold discussions about the changes that are needed in our own field.

Especially because our field is so very slow to change.

No Change For You

Let’s be honest about things: medicine doesn’t like change.

Normally, in medicine, change takes time, because we rely on so many algorithms that are based on years of well-structured research.

But this holds us back!

The rest of the fields of today change because they see change is warranted. They don’t wait for research to get them moving. They simply implement what’s necessary and hit “go”.

So why are we, in medicine, so slow to follow suit?

I’m hoping that more of the discussions that we feature in our Series and our Magazine will get us speaking up about this. The conferences I’m now building online are quick and easy to take part in. Most are even FREE while they’re live.

I’m hoping that the online interactive communities we’ve set up will allow for open communication that gets us sharing our wisdom. Our thoughts. And especially our ideas.

Let’s move forward together, and proudly challenge the notion that innovation is bad, in medicine.
