Music While Working Weekends
I am selective about when and how much I work on weekends. This Saturday morning I had to dig in on grants and talks with an easy hits playlist in the background. Do you listen to music when you write? What genre? #NASPGHAN23 #GrantWriting pic.twitter.com/nrOOsmVm4R

Nanny Gets It
Being a nanny for a dual-physician household is no joke.
But being a nanny for an emergency medicine physician/ trauma surgeon household might be even worse.But. Today.

Wandarwoman
Lots of late nights recently working on a grant. Busy time for leadership responsibilities. Long days in clinic recently 😔… But came home to this from my son and now feel energized. 💪#LetsDoThis #DoctorMom #WomenInScience pic.twitter.com/YWEVYcPINr

The Upside Down of Medical Imaging:
Influencers are hawking whole-body MRIs while I can’t get an insurance company to approve a CT abdomen for my patient with pancreatic cancer (they did, however, approve a CT pelvis🤦♂️)

If it Was Cancer, People Would Believe It
When a patient with sickle cell disease feels like cancer would be better because they wouldn’t have been born with it, people would then believe their symptoms, and there’s a chance of cure, your heart breaks into a million pieces.

Will You Truly Be “Happy When”.. ?
“I’ll be happy when I finish residency.”
The culture of “I’ll be happy when…” is rampant in medicine. I experienced it for years. Happiness isn’t waiting around the corner for us. Happiness is found in the journey, chasing our dreams, & taking small steps every single day.

Moonlighting as a Resident
It’s amazing and sad at the same time how much a single moonlighting shift a month can improve a residents quality of life, ability to save/travel/pay down debts etc. Glad I have the opportunity.

Insurance a TSA Pre-Check?
Idea – a “TSA pre check” equivalent for insurance auths. I can interview with insurance companies, present cases, and show them that I’m an evidence-based physician and not a money-grubbing quack. And also that I win >95% of my P2Ps/appeals anyway. Time/$ savings would be huge!

Billions in Profits
Me thinking about how middlemen in healthcare make billions profiting off of patients…meanwhile hardworking mom of two sweet kids is in tears in front of me sitting in an ER hallway bed because she couldn’t come up with the $800 UPFRONT that a specialist clinic required before…

A $1200 EKG!
My primary care doc bills my insurance $100 when he does an EKG in-office.
He wanted another, I said could I go to my local hospital to get one? “Yes.”
I went by, they said would do it. I asked how much–
$1,200!
I said no thank you.
My doc did it.

Enjoy Your Hard Work
Three mentees have told me they were accepted into medical school today!
My immediate instructions: take the day off 😊 and take-in this great accomplishment.
We need to set the tone of letting each other have a moment to enjoy our hard work.
With coffee, ideally ☕️
