We’ve all heard the saying: “Sitting is the new smoking.” But what if the cure isn’t a standing desk or a 10,000-step day, but just ten squats, every 45 minutes?
It sounds like a joke your overly-fit coworker might make, but it’s backed by compelling research. A 2022 study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that intermittent bodyweight squats can significantly improve muscle protein synthesis and glucose regulation during long bouts of sitting. And it gets even more relatable: a reel circulating on social media shows a physician quietly rising from his chair between meetings and performing ten deep squats. No mat, no gym, no excuses. Just motion, modeled in real time.
That’s because muscles, while often thought of as mere movers, are metabolic powerhouses. After meals, blood glucose rises, and insulin steps in to shuttle that sugar into cells. But there’s a bonus pathway: when muscles contract, they can draw glucose from the bloodstream independently of insulin. That means using your muscles, especially large groups like glutes and quads, can help lower blood sugar without needing a full-blown workout.
Dr. Nikhil Verma, a sports and spine specialist who’s also a lecturer in our SoMeDocsPain course, explains the mechanism further: “Active muscles increase the expression of GLUT-4 receptors, which in effect help the muscle intake more circulating blood sugar. This is used as a primary fuel source for active muscles, and can help with insulin sensitivity in the body..”
So why squats? Squats hit multiple major muscle groups – glutes, quads, hamstrings, and even the core – all in one compact motion. That’s a lot of metabolic bang for very little buck. And unlike a long walk (which is still great), squats are intense enough to generate meaningful muscular engagement in a short time.
You don’t need a gym. You don’t even need gym clothes. “It is simple to do body weight 10-15 air squats or lunges (use support if needed) a few times a day, especially after eating.” says Dr. Verma. “Lightweight dumbbells or resistance bands are great options for upper body workouts. You don’t need to do a full workout session, just enough to get the muscles moving against resistance.”
