Shining a Light in the Darkness: Reflecting and Advocating During Gun Violence Awareness Month

Amanda Kaine, MBS writes about gun violence and advocating for a brighter, lighter world.

June 17, 2024

Every single day, more then 120 people are killed by a gun.

That’s 120 too many.

Gun violence awareness month is a time to not only a time to reflect on the thousands of lives impacted on the DAILY, but a time for advocation of measures that can play a role in shaping how our future lies.

You never know how it feels… unless you’re affected by it.

Having my friend’s life taken away from her due to a bullet is something that should never have happened. A day marked in history by a high school that would otherwise never of been known by the public eye.

Why

Why should we need to know what we should be doing in an active shooting?

Unfortunately, because these types of events occur so much- we must know what to do to protect ourselves. It is unfortunate that we have to learn how to hide, what codes mean, and how to respond to ensure our safety. Active shootings happen far too frequently. We must educate, advocate, and be proactive on how to respond in these situations.

“Having my friend’s life taken away from her due to a bullet is something that should never have happened.”

In 2018, I went through the aftermath of what a school shooting can do to a community. It caused coalition- yet led us to be full of fear. In 2018, I also attended “March for our Lives” in Washington, D.C. We advocated for gun violence safety on the capital of the United States. We screamed, we fought, and we were there to make our voices heard. Many changes have been made, but the problem persists.

Wear orange for this month. Learn the statistics of how many affected and understand the impact a gun can make when shot at innocent people for no reason. Together, we can contribute towards the efforts towards a better future. Not one more should be affected.

And forever and always, MSD Strong.

Positivity

Lastly, as violence fills the air and times become scary, I want to leave you with a positive message that I hope can stick with you….

Because we live in a world full of uncertainty, I hope this message brings you clarity.

Every single day should never be taken for granted.

We should fill our days doing what we love and making both our purpose and passions known. We should tell those we love how much we really do love them. We never know when our last tomorrow could be… that is why it is crucial to make and live everyday like it’s your last.

Propagate a world full of love, spread kindness, and be the light the world needs to see. You never know whose bulb you can light.. be someone’s candle in a time full of darkness.

Everybody deserves to shine, everybody deserves to be seen, and everybody deserves to illuminate their dreams into a reality.
