ABOUT THIS LECTURE

Target Audience:

This lecture aims to help clinicians or employee-development staff to set up and run an expressive writing workshop — either within their healthcare facility or within their service area.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Why: A brief overview and take-home links on the supporting research for/on the value of expressive writing–for healthcare professionals and for the general public
  2. Where: Location, location, location. No, it’s not just for real-estate sellers! Our writing-workshop participants need to feel included and welcome. We will also share tips for enhancing a virtual workshop. So whether it’s online or on-site, the location really matters.
  3. How: This is the longest part of the presentation. It will cover issues such as (a) how to gauge colleague interest in a wellness-writing workshop (b) how to spread the word, including must-have language to use in the posting or advertisement (c) Based on the Amherst Method and other standardized methodologies, we’ll talk about room setup, scheduling and best-practice leader-behaviors. The goal? To transcend in-hospital roles or organizational charts so that all participant writers feel welcome, emotionally safe and empowered to write and share in a way that works for them–and that respects their individual learning styles.  This lecture can include links to writing-workshop guidelines from other thought leaders in this field.
