Ryan McCarthy, MD, lives and works in his hometown of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Since 2006, he has been an internal medicine doctor, serving the community that raised him. In spring 2020, he created Healthcare is Human (HIH) to chronicle his experience during the Covid-19 pandemic, working with photographer Molly Humphreys and radio producer Kym Mattioli to tell authentic stories from healthcare. Poet Renée K. Nicholson joined the HIH creative team in 2022. HIH includes photography, podcasts, museum exhibits, social media, academic conferences, and telling dozens of stories. McCarthy is the founding program director of the Berkeley Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency, where he teaches storytelling skills to resident physicians to help them better understand their healthcare experiences. He is happily married to Dr. Erica Patthoff, a general dentist, and they have three children, Isaac, Liam, and Eliza, and a spirited dog named Mabel.
