Ryan McCarthy, MD, lives and works in his hometown of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Since 2006, he has been an internal medicine doctor, serving the community that raised him. In spring 2020, he created Healthcare is Human (HIH) to chronicle his experience during the Covid-19 pandemic, working with photographer Molly Humphreys and radio producer Kym Mattioli to tell authentic stories from healthcare. McCarthy is the founding program director of the Berkeley Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency, where he teaches storytelling skills to resident physicians to help them better understand their healthcare experiences.
