Objective: Defining palliative care and understanding how it can support patients with cancer.
- Expanding this objective: Cancer-center based palliative care is focused on improving quality of life for patients suffering symptoms (either from cancer or the treatments) that interfere with daily functioning. Common symptom management areas are pain, nausea, constipation, fatigue, nutrition, dealing with loss of identity and creation of a new identity, spiritual and psychosocial distress, dealing with uncertainty, goals of care conversations and planning for end of life.
Objective: Creating a trans-disciplinary team approach with focused expertise in palliative medicine.
- Expanding this objective: In addition to physician-led care, many palliative care teams are comprised of nursing, social work, spiritual care, and other specialists who all contribute to a more well-rounded set of offerings.
