A career in medicine is often characterized as the ultimate calling, a serious responsibility, and often one that comes with a price. Trying to build or raise a family while rising up through the ranks often pits professional and personal goals against one another. The 1:4 rate of infertility amongst women physicians, as well as the higher demonstrated rates of obstetric complications, show that in many instances, it may be impossible to do and have it all.
As an expert in reproductive and lifestyle medicine, and a so-called “geriatric mother” who balanced pregnancy, loss, and motherhood alongside a busy clinical career, Dr. Rashmi Kudesia will discuss how women physicians can best advocate for their own family-building, and how we can evolve our house of medicine to be more supportive too.
In this talk, aimed toward female medical students, trainees, physicians, and those who aim to be family-friendly colleagues and leaders in medicine, we will cover the following objectives:
- Detailing the current state of infertility, obstetric complications, and postpartum parental leave amongst female physicians
- Highlighting methods for individuals and organizations to better support healthy pregnancies and postpartum recovery
- Addressing the comprehensive approaches to mitigating infertility, including treatments and lifestyle hacks tailored to busy physicians
