Medical Writing: What Is It and Can Get Paid For It?

Karen Hovav, MD, FAAP will provide an overview of various types of medical writing, how to know if it’s right for you, and how to get paid for it.


Target audience: Doctors who want to learn about medical writing as a non-clinical career path, whether as a paid side-gig, part-time role or full-time paid position. 

Learning objectives:

-Learn about different types of medical writing (ex: regulatory medical writing, health communication for the public, promotional/marketing, medical education, medical communications)

-Review various paths for employment as a medical writer (pharmaceutical industry, healthcare websites, Contract Research Organizations (CROs), freelancing, etc). 

-Understand what personal qualities are a great match for a career in medical writing

-Review concrete steps to take to “test out the waters” or move forward in making medical writing a career path

Karen Hovav

Karen Hovav, MD, FAAP

Dr Hovav is a board-certified pediatrician with over 18 years in clinical practice in diverse hospital and clinic-based settings. She has a passion for health communication, whether it’s through writing, podcasting, coaching or clinical practice. Her specialty as a medical writer and editor is in the area of health communication for the public. She has written for health education companies, parenting websites and medical education blogs. She serves as a medical editor and podcast host for HippoEducation, a medical education company for physicians and other health professionals. Dr Hovav is also a certified Life Coach with a special love for providing support to moms of neurodiverse children. Dr Hovav is an attending pediatrician at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. She received her medical degree from Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, and completed her residency training at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. In her spare time, she enjoys all things craft-related, karaoke and traveling with her husband and 3 young children.
