Just a Doctor

Amna Shabbir, MD shares a poem that reflects the support physicians need and how a coach can provide it.

From/about the article: So who is this doctor? Who is not your doctor, But just A Doctor, Neither your mentor, Nor advisor or friend.

Sometimes all you want to do-

Is talk to A Doctor,
Who is not really your doctor,
But just A Doctor,
Who is not your mentor,
Nor your advisor,
Neither your friend,
Whose not going to write that recommendation letter.

Sometimes all you want to do-

Is talk to A Doctor,
who has been where you have,
Who knows how it hurts,
When your soul, your mind and body are all bruised,
Who knows how it is to get up and keep going after all the blows to your existence.
Sometimes all you want to do-
Is talk to A Doctor,
who knows what it is like,
to be made to feel insane,
when really you are the only voice of reason,
In a room full of treason.
Sometimes all you want to do-
Is talk to A Doctor,
who knows what it’s like to have loved your patients and then to have lost them,
who knows how it feels when the code fails,
who has tasted the bitterness of sharing the news of death with a loved ones family.
Sometimes all you want to do-
Is talk to A Doctor,
Who knows what it’s like to want to walk away,
From medicine,
Or from life,
But then decide to stay.
So who is this doctor?
Who is not your doctor,
But just A Doctor,
Neither your mentor,
Nor advisor or friend.
It’s a Physician Coach,
Who has walked your path,
Who has felt your pain,
Who knows how rigged is the game,
Who has felt that common shame,
Who can hold out a mirror for you to see,
Who can help you find the promise of all that you can be.
So find that doctor my friend,
Surely this is not the end.
