Is It Clinical? Evaluating and Understanding Clinical Experiences for Applying to Medical School

Deborah Gutman, MD, MPH will help you understand the different opportunities, how to evaluate them and how to obtain them.

2023-11-20 12:00 EST

Target Audience: Pre health students (Premed and PrePA) applying for medical school or PA school.

Background: Clinical experience has become a “dealbreaker” for applications to health professional programs – particularly medical school and PA school. However, understanding and accessing clinical experiences for students can be challenging, particularly when it comes to paid experiences.

Students will understand the role of clinical experiences (paid and volunteer) in their candidacy for medical school applications.

Students need to know how to navigate the confusing landscape of entry-level clinical positions – what positions are available and appropriate for pre-health students, how to prepare for them, the need for training or certifications, what transferable experiences will make them great candidates for the jobs, and how to help students evaluate and find clinical jobs.

Certifications can be time-consuming and costly – so when does a student need to pursue certification?

Getting paid clinical experience during college and gap years is increasingly common and knowledge about the preparation for and value of these jobs in obtaining important competencies is paramount for advisors.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will hear student and medical and PA school admissions perspectives on how paid clinical experience can be an important component of professional school readiness

Participants will understand the differences between the most common entry-level healthcare jobs including Certified Nursing Assistants, Patient Care Technicians, Scribes, and Medical Assistants.

Participants will identify other entry-level healthcare jobs that may provide valuable competencies to pre-health students.

Participants will list transferable volunteer or undergraduate experiences that can improve student candidacy for paid clinical employment.

Participants will identify the educational and certification requirements for different entry-level healthcare jobs.

Participants will develop a framework to assist students in evaluating paid clinical experiences. Participants will consider how their institution might be able to support preparedness for entry-level healthcare experiences
