How Do You Share Your Work?

First-time author Susan Baumgaertel, MD, shares her open mic experience from the day before Thanksgiving.

How do you share your work?

Here is how I share mine, having just recently published a book.

I had the opportunity to attend an open mic session for local authors the evening before Thanksgiving, and it was a blast!

This was held at a large (think Barnes & Noble-sized) bookstore called Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, 15 miles north of Seattle. I was surprised that 50-60 people showed up—did they not have turkeys to prep and pies to bake?!!

The group was diverse in every way imaginable and not a chair was empty in the audience—I think it was standing room only.

Those of us speaking drew numbers. Mine was 12, so I stepped up to the mic after many others had already read their five-minute selections.

The authors before me had written mostly fiction, and the audience was treated to passages from a few steamy romance novels, futuristic and dystopian books, and fantasy-inspired autobiographies.

My book, The Menopause Menu, provided a nonfiction interlude!

I was in good company though, as there were two other nonfiction authors at the mic soon after me. One was a grizzled photographer who had published a one-of-a-kind coffee table photo book of concerts he had attended over the past 50 years as a rock group roadie documentary photographer. The other was a tall, soft-spoken man who had written a manual on how to pursue a college degree in engineering.

I even met someone who had come to my book launch event two months prior. She was a petite, retired woman who had written about her daughter who died in a flash flood while trekking in the Indian Himalayan mountains at the young age of 22.

I see a coffee date in our futures!

I appreciate that my book is widely available in 12 countries through Amazon, but I also love the grounding experience of local flavor and human interactions.
