Epic Unveils Massive AI Rollout Across U.S. Healthcare: 100+ Features Aimed at Clinicians, Patients, and Systems

Epic is set to launch over 100 new AI features across its EHR platform, marking what could be the largest system-wide AI integration in U.S. healthcare, reshaping how clinicians, patients, and health systems interact with care.

In what may become the largest system-wide AI deployment in American healthcare history, Epic Systems has announced plans to launch over 100 new AI-powered tools across its electronic health record (EHR) platform. The rollout, detailed at Epic’s August 2024 User Group Meeting (UGM), will impact clinicians, patients, and health systems alike, integrating artificial intelligence directly into clinical workflows at unprecedented scale.

If successful, this move positions Epic not just as the dominant EHR provider, but as a closed-loop AI platform, controlling data (via Epic Cosmos), interface (MyChart), and physician-facing tools (EHR, ambient documentation).

 

 

AI Tools for Clinicians

Epic’s new features aim to cut down on administrative burden, streamline care delivery, and support clinical decision-making. Highlights include:

  • Plain-language rewrites of patient messages and chart notes
  • Auto-suggested orders for labs, imaging, and medications
  • Drafted prior authorization appeals and denial letters
  • A new AI-powered scheduling tool, dubbed Teamwork, for both MDs and RNs
  • Ambient documentation, already live at over 70 sites

These tools are designed to handle high-friction, repetitive tasks—freeing clinicians to focus on direct care.

In a demo that turned heads, Epic showcased an AI agent inside MyChart guiding a post-op patient: it interpreted wrist movements via a smartphone camera, compared recovery speed against Cosmos data, and delivered personalized feedback. “Wait a bit longer before returning to pickleball.”

 

AI at the System Level

For health systems, Epic is experimenting with:

  • Direct claims submission, bypassing traditional clearinghouses
  • Fully automated patient-agent interactions (in early demo phase)

These features, if deployed widely, could dramatically reduce backend friction across billing and scheduling systems.

 

Powered by Epic Cosmos

Many of these AI tools rely on Epic Cosmos, the company’s growing, de-identified dataset of over 280 million patients. Cosmos provides the backbone for population-level comparisons, contextual message generation, and predictive recovery tracking.

By owning both the data and the interface, Epic is building a closed feedback loop where system-wide behavior trains and refines future AI models.
