EMS: First Responders to Genetic Change

Angela P Cornelius, MD and Whitney Morgan, EMT, will explore how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence gene expression through epigenetic changes, examine the role of EMS providers in identifying and addressing SDOH, and review research on how resolving these factors can lead to lasting health improvements at a genetic level.

ABOUT THIS LECTURE

A person’s genetic code is something they are born with. Expression of individual genes, however, can be affected by environmental factors that cause epigenetic changes that effect the way, or even if, these genes are expressed. Many of these environmental factors are social determinants of health (SDOH). Epigenetic changes are reversible. In EMS we have access to patient’s homes and can often see the SDOH at play in the home and therefore can screen very easily. Can we as EMS with our access to patient’s homes screen for social determinants of health, direct resources to the patients, and make real lasting health change at a genetic level in our patients? In this lecture a physician and a biostatician/genetics researcher will review SDOH, their effects on patients down to the genetic level, and the literature regarding SDOH resolution and lasting improved patient health status.

Target Audience: physicians and other clinicians who are looking for innovative ways to affect real change on the health or their patients and clients.

Learning Objectives:
-Define SDOH and provide examples of their impact on individual health.
-Explain the concept of epigenetics and how environmental factors can influence gene expression.
-Understand the role of EMS providers in identifying and addressing SDOH.
-Analyze the epigenetic effects of resolution of SDOH

Dr. Angela Cornelius is Associate System Medical Director for the Fort Worth Office of the Medical Director. Primary responsibilities include Mobile Integrated Healthcare and EMS Innovations. She is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine with TCU/UNTHSC who practices at John Peter Smith Hospital as core faculty EM Residency. She is boarded in EM, Family Medicine, and EMS and holds a master’s in International Disaster Management. She is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and Academy of Emergency Medical Services. She has been active in disaster medicine and EMS for over 10 years and serves as the past Chair of the American College of Emergency Physicians Disaster Medicine Committee and Chair of Air Medical section and the NAEMSP Emergency Preparedness Committee. Current administrative projects include creating more robust community paramedicine programs and EMS induction of buprenorphine. Whitney Burr, MS, NRP, holds a Masters of Science in Bioinformatics from the University of Maryland. She is currently a PhD candidate in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics with George Mason University. Her research currently focuses on COVID and aging. Whitney began working in EMS in 2008 and has worked as a Paramedic in urban, rural, and austere environments since. For the last four years, Whitney has served as the lead data scientist for MedStar Mobile Healthcare. When not working with data, she continues to serve as a paramedic in a local Fort Worth ER.
