The EMR I Use as a Private Practice Orthopedic Surgeon

Daniel Paull, MD uses a “dirt cheap” EMR for cash pay patients, to keep costs low.

Some have been asking what EMR I use.

I really like mine and it costs me about $18 per user per month.

Normal billing machine EMRs could easily be 30X that cost, or more.

When you use an EMR that’s not for billing is where you can save a lot of money.

I use a HIPAA compliant google workspace.

You need to sign the business agreement, and then it makes all of the tools that google workspace uses (email, calendar etc) HIPAA compliant.

Over time, I have templated word docs, orders, and everything in between.

When I make a new patients chart, I simply create a new folder.

I upload the intake form from my iPad directly onto the drive, and then start writing my notes and orders.

Save as PDF and re-upload. Send PDFs out for those that need to get the orders or labs.

What it looks like is this: a searchable folder for each patient, with all records and orders loaded up in PDF.

You can use this from your phone, tablet, or any other computer, as it is cloud based.

Things it can’t do: chart labs, send scripts, send faxes.

Is it a perfect solution? No, but it’s pretty good.

No click boxes, real text that creates readable notes.
