Working in the Corporate Expert Medical Opinion Space

Robin Schoenthaler, MD lectures on how working to help patients obtain Expert Medical Opinions through an existing company offers physicians the opportunity to be the doctor they always wanted to be.

(This lecture is part of our Non-Clinical Conference: A Beginner’s Guide)

There are variety of opportunities available in the Expert Medical Opinion (EMO)  space, most of which are unknown to the average physician and many of which provide physicians with the opportunity to help patients in a setting that includes all they love about medicine: offering a real service to patients in need, playing a significant role in the trajectory of a patient’s life and the outcome of their illness, lifelong learning opportunities, and a schedule conducive to work life balance with fair compensation.

I’ve been working in the EMO arena since 2016, first while working clinically and now while semi-retired.   I currently work with Teladoc Health Services and will talk about their system but will also include information about working with other programs such as 2nd MD, Grand Rounds/Included Health, N1X10 and other models.

The target audience is physicians who want to learn about an opportunity to do valuable non-clinical remote work.

The educational objectives include:

a) Learn the definitions of Expert Medical Opinion services and how these differ from Patient Advocate work
b) Learn the services offered by different EMO companies and the roles played by physicians in them
c) Appreciate the impact of HIPAA regulations, medical record transfer, imaging issues and the patient/physician relationship in supplying EMOs

d) Offer information on employment or contracting opportunities with these companies
