ABOUT THIS LECTURE

Target Audience: This lecture is designed for forward-thinking healthcare professionals, including physicians, medical students, and healthcare administrators, who are eager to explore and integrate cutting-edge AI technologies into their practices.

Objectives:

In this lecture, Steven Charlap, MD (NYU), Trained Surgeon, MBA (Harvard), Fellow and Researcher (Stanford), spent the last 11 years, including 5 at Stanford and Harvard, working on AI. In this not to be missed lecture, Dr. Charlap, a serial medical entrepreneur who founded HealthDrive (acquired), offers a compelling re-framing of the future of medicine: the real disruption isn’t that artificial intelligence will replace doctors, it’s that AI will shift power toward patients.

He argues that AI doesn’t care about what physicians do that is uniquely human (empathy, compassion, bedside manner). What it does care about are the gaps in care: knowledge blind spots, human frailties, fatigue, distraction, arrogance, access problems, delayed diagnoses, and poor data collection. AI sees these as opportunities to create a new concept of Personal Health Intelligence™ PHI). PHI sees patients who have historically been passive, uninformed, or underserved and seeks to empower them to be savvy, critical, and engaged consumers of healthcare.

The talk explores how the traditional ‘physician-patient contract,’ where doctors held knowledge and patients followed directions, has already been upended. In the era of continuous data, AI-driven insights, and content-empowered patients, physicians will increasingly become interpreters, synthesizers, decision guides, and guardians of meaning in primary care and beyond. Dr. Charlap emphasizes that physicians aren’t being replaced; they are being asked to evolve toward higher-order skills.

He warns that doctors who fear the technology or cling to authority may not lose jobs, but they may lose relevance. The true competitive dynamic is not machine vs. doctor, but machine enabling patient-doctor relationships in new forms. AI, he says, is coming for patients, not to hand them to machines, but to give them better tools, better questions, and a new baseline of knowledge, thereby forcing clinicians to evolve to meet patients at a new starting line.

In short, Dr. Charlap’s lecture is: provocative, grounded in clinical reality, and deeply human. It challenges the medical profession to embrace change, not as a threat, but as an opportunity to deepen its value. His 40+ years of clinical experience, just completed work with the NIH as a principal investigator, and current work with the NHS (UK) as a co-investigator with Imperial College London on AI-enhanced patient diagnosis, and his founding of and leadership at Medome (www.medome.ai), makes him among the top experts in this space.
