I started PEM- Pediatric Emergency Mom in the fall of 2019 at the request of several friends. I had posted an educational video about fever that went viral (no pun intended). Friends were asking for more videos, so PEM was created.
The purpose of the community is education for anyone, whether it be a parents, grandparent, or even teachers. The goal is to create a proactive culture in pediatric healthcare, rather than a reactive one. During training, we are taught about anticipatory guidance for safety, but not really for pediatric illness, injury, or mental health. PEM makes this information readily available to families.
The community grew rapidly during COVID, as I remained an objective source of information, filtering through mountains of data and articles to present a concise message to my followers. With the growth, came a better sense of community. While no direct medical advice is given by myself in the group, members can submit general questions to the group as a whole. Responses come from the community, which does include many pediatricians and other pediatric healthcare professionals. These responses are monitored to assure safety is maintained.
