Have you seen the short list for Time’s Person of the Year? It’s a (mostly) pathetic list of personalities and politicians: Joe Rogan, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and of course the obligatory 2024 presidential pretenders Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
Time has continued this charade since 1927, naming primarily world leaders, dignitaries, and cultural figures – and an occasional celebrity. Last year was an example of a superstar. Quick, can you name the person?
Too late. It was Taylor Swift. It just goes to show how insignificant Time’s picks can be.
I guess the editors knew their choices might quickly fade from public consciousness (despite Swift’s successful Eras tour), so they decided to expanded the category around the turn of the century to include an idea, concept, object, or group – for example, Whistleblowers (2002), Protestors (2011), Silence Breakers (#MeToo in 2017), and Guardians (2018).

Witness my vote for this year’s candidate: Artificial Intelligence (AI) – a concept, but really a conglomerate of all categories.
AI has been the most talked about and hyped development of 2024, already transforming operations across numerous sectors, from manufacturing to financial services. In the health sector, AI has ushered in groundbreaking advancements in several areas, including psychotherapy, substituting for therapists, and also sitting in for doctors.
AI systems that possess the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks at a level comparable to human intelligence – so-called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) – are the ones to keep an eye on.
Unlike narrow AI, which is designed for specific tasks, AGI is capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can. The development of AGI is a major goal in the field of AI research, but it remains largely theoretical at this point, as current AI systems are specialized and lack the generalization capabilities of human cognition.

AGI is not a new idea.
Just the other night I was watching an episode of the original Star Trek series: “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” which first aired in 1966. The promise of AGI was featured, although it was not called that by name.
Dr. Roger Korby, a brilliant yet morally compromised scientist, attempts to achieve human immortality by transferring consciousness into android bodies, ultimately surpassing the limits of humanity and identity. Such a feat involves multiple disciplines, including computer science, neuroscience, philosophy, and ethics. Surely it should garner accolades and long overdue recognition as Time’s Person of the Year.
Human consciousness is a deeply intricate phenomenon involving awareness, perception, and the ability to experience thoughts and emotions. There are theoretical challenges, such as understanding how subjective experiences arise from neural processes, the nature of self-awareness, and the integration of sensory information into a coherent perception of reality.
Replicating human consciousness in machines would require not only advanced computational capabilities but also a deep understanding of the underlying mechanisms of consciousness itself, which remains a significant challenge.

Presently, AI systems, even the most advanced models, are far from achieving true AGI. They excel in specific domains but lack the generalization and adaptability of human cognition. Current AI research focuses on improving learning algorithms, neural network architectures, and integrating multi-modal sensory inputs to move closer to AGI.
The development of AGI with human-like consciousness raises many ethical questions, including considerations of machine rights, the impact on employment and society, and the potential risks of creating entities capable of making autonomous decisions. These concerns underscore the need for robust ethical frameworks and regulatory oversight to ensure that AGI serves humanity without undermining its core values.
There is ongoing debate about whether machines can truly replicate human consciousness or if they would merely simulate it. Some philosophers argue that consciousness is inherently biological and cannot be reproduced in a machine, while others believe it is possible, given the right computational structures and processes.
Although significant progress is being made in AI research, achieving AGI that replicates human consciousness and behavior remains a long-term goal.
Still, it is a compelling theme, especially in medicine, due to its potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery, diagnostics, and patient care.
In theory, AGI could analyze vast amounts of medical data far more quickly and accurately than human practitioners, leading to more precise diagnoses and personalized treatment plans. This capability could enhance decision-making in complex cases by integrating information from diverse sources, including genetic data, medical history, and real-time patient monitoring.
Furthermore, AGI could significantly improve the efficiency of clinical workflows by automating routine tasks, allowing healthcare professionals to focus more on direct patient care.
It could also facilitate the development of new medical technologies and therapies by identifying patterns and insights that are challenging for humans to discern. The potential for AGI to simulate human cognition also raises intriguing possibilities for mental health treatment, as it could lead to the development of advanced therapeutic tools and support systems that go beyond traditional approaches seen with AI-driven screening tools and chat bots.

If you are convinced there a place for AGI in the future, I suggest you watch a different episode of the original Star Trek series: “The Ultimate Computer.”
An advanced artificially intelligent control system, the M-5 Multitronic unit, is capable of operating the Enterprise with only a skeleton crew. However, M-5 malfunctions and engages in real war rather than simulated war. Captain Kirk disables M-5, but he must gamble on the humanity of an opposing star ship captain to not retaliate against the Enterprise, and the vessel is spared.
Kirk tells Mr. Spock that he knew the other captain personally and was certain he would show compassion. Dr. McCoy adds: “Compassion. That’s the one thing no machine ever had.”
On second thought, perhaps AI does need more persona before we can nominate it for Time’s Person of the Year.
