For those working in medicine, it’s probably mentioned alongside bold predictions that AI will soon take over tasks like charting, scheduling, and even managing patient messages. But what exactly is agentic AI, and should we be worried, excited, or both?
Let’s break it down.
So, What Is Agentic AI?
Traditional AI systems, like those that help you autocomplete a sentence or generate a lab report summary, are reactive. They respond when asked. You give them input, they give you output. Nothing more, nothing less.
Agentic AI, on the other hand, is proactive. It’s designed to carry out tasks independently, often across multiple steps and systems, with minimal (or even no) human prompting once it’s been trained or instructed. These AI “agents” can:
- Draft and send messages to patients
- Monitor charts and lab results to flag issues
- Schedule follow-ups and coordinate care logistics
- Submit prior authorizations
- Even chase down missing data from other systems
Think of it as the difference between asking Siri for directions versus giving a digital assistant your day’s agenda, and then having it arrange your schedule, book your ride, and message your appointments for you.
