A Game You Can’t Win

Daniel Paull MD explains that health insurance has created an un-winnable game for both physicians and patients.

January 22, 2024

Imagine you were playing a game with a 5 year old child. They made up all of the rules, and you are just a player.

As you play the game, you realize that they keep changing the rules such that you can never win.

Assuming you like this 5 year old, you may keep playing just to humor them, and try to teach them that changing the rules to the game, while it is being played is very unfair.

You might also tell them that if they keep doing this, then no one will want to play with them.

Now imagine the same scenario, but instead of a 5 year old, it is a 50 year old.

Would you be so kind?

In all probability, you would end up being pretty annoyed, and likely wouldn’t want to spend as much time around the 50 year old.

Now imagine instead of a person doing this, it is a company, and the prize for winning is money.

Would you still want to play a game that they can make the rules up to?

If you start coming out ahead, they will make sure that you come out behind.

This is what health insurance companies do exactly.

They make the rules to the game of how a doctor gets paid.

If the doctor doesn’t do everything exactly right, they won’t get paid.

If the doctor starts doing well, they change the rules so they start losing again.

You can’t ever expect to get ahead in a game where the other side can change the rules on a whim.
